The 400m Olympic Gold medalist, pictured celebrating her victory at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, was born on this day in 1973. Freeman, an Australian Aborigine, lit the Olympic Flame at the commencement of the those games. Her first medal at a major championship was Gold as part of the 4x100m relay team at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. She went on to win a further 10 major medals, including a silver in the 400m at the Atlanta Olympics, and Gold in the World Championships in 1997 and 1999.
