On This Day: 25th february
Sir Donald Bradman
The man simply known as 'The Don', pictured on the Australian tour of England in 1930, died on this day aged 92. His Test match batting average of 99.94 over 20 years is almost twice that of the next best player, and it has been hailed as statistically the greatest achievement in any major sport. Such was his dominance at the crease that the term 'Bradmanesque' has entered the cricketing vernacular in reference to any feat of imperious batsmanship. It has been claimed that such were his achievements that they transcended the sport, and even altered Autralia's relationship to its 'mother-country' Great Britain.
